American Idol alum Katharine McPhee is seen on the set of the pilot for the new NBC musical drama Smash Monday in New York (Mar. 14).
Also starring Anjelica Huston and Debra Messing and produced by Steven Spielberg, the show will trace the creation of a Broadway musical inspired by Marilyn Monroe from conception to opening night. A lot of people are already calling it the more grown-up version of Glee. Katharine will – of course – play a singer in the new show.
Katharine told the OC Register last week that her role in Smash is a dream come true:
“I’m here in New York shooting an NBC pilot called “Smash,” based on the creation of a Broadway musical. It’s an hour-long musical drama. It has some amazing people involved, like Anjelica Huston and Megan Hilty. We’re starting to do the preliminary things for that. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope it gets picked up. It’s sort of like living my dream, to do acting like this; it’s a huge passion of mine.”
