A Look Back: "Rock of Ages"

“A Look Back” is a series of posts we here at Caughtonset.com feature weekly. It’s as simple as the title makes it sound. Each Friday we will take “A Look Back” to the set of a newly released film. Look at pictures from the set today, then watch the movie tonight.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Tom Cruise and even Katy Perry were caught on set of Rock of Ages while it was being filmed last Summer. The '80s themed musical, which was directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray) and also stars Alec Baldwin and Bryan Cranston hits theaters this weekend. Does this flashback in time have enough to take the number one spot at the box office this weekend? Not according to Ray Subers from boxofficemojo.com:

"The box office gets a heavy dose of 80s nostalgia this weekend thanks to musical Rock of Ages, which utilizes 80s rock tunes for all of its songs, and R-rated comedy That's My Boy, which finds Adam Sandler sporting an 80s mullet. This isn't the first time that a June weekend has harkened back to that decade: in 2010, The Karate Kid remake and The A-Team adaptation opened to a combined $81 million. There's virtually no chance that Rock of Ages and That's My Boy deliver a similar result, and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted will likely hold on to first place."

Madagascar 3 was the surprises winner last weekend, knocking off Ridley Scott's Prometheus, and it doesn't seem to have slowed too much over its first week in theaters. Subers is projecting Rock of Ages to finish in second this weekend at $28.6 million, behind only Madagascar 3 which he projects to drop 44% to $33.8 million. There is lots to choose from this weekend, animated family movie, R-rated comedy or 1980's musical. I don't think I can choose between all these great offerings, I might just have to see more than one.

Ever since Russell married Katy Perry last year, there's been talk that their marriage is on the rocks. Don't believe the hype - the two couldn't be more in love. An insider told Now magazine:

"The first new rule is to have date nights each week whenever they're in the US. So when Katy got back to their LA home last month, Russ took her to the cinema to see The Hangover Part II. They sat in the back row and kissed like teenagers - it was like one long foreplay session!"

Russell Brand is spotted hanging with his wife Katy Perry on the set of Rock of Ages in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Wednesday (June 1). What a hip couple!

Even though Katy's on a mini break from her tour, she certainly hasn't stopped working. On Tuesday she tweeted: "Werking on bringing Tour.0 (2.0) #CALIFORNIADREAMSTOUR to USA. It's bigger, better & w/more balls! Party in the USA fer SURE! #cantwait!"

In case you're look for something to do this weekend, Russell has a movie recommendation. Over the weekend he tweeted: "Go and see Bridesmaids. It is beautiful and full of incredible comedy performances. Go on."

Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin are spotted on the set of Rock of Ages in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Tuesday (May 31). The pic was tweeted by director Adam Shankman, who wrote: "First look! World premiere! Russell and Alec making my life heaven on #rockofagesmovie"

Baldwin plays Bourbon Room club owner Dennis Dupree in the film and Brand plays the club's manager Lonny. Here's a bit more about the plot from CNN's Marquee Blog:

"The 80's-themed movie tells the story of a small-town girl named Sherrie (Julianne Hough) who moves to Hollywood to act. She takes a job at the Bourbon Room and starts a romance with Drew (Diego Boneta), who ends up getting Sherrie fired after she has a dalliance with Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). Although Sherrie finds herself working at a gentleman's club owned by Justice (Mary J. Blige), she eventually leaves exotic dancing so she can find true love."

February 1 -- Russell Brand is seen on the set of his new comedy Arthur at Grand Central Station in New York.

Interestingly, Arthur is scheduled for an April 8 release -- just one week after his animated feature Hop hits theaters.

In other exciting news for Russell, it was just announced that, for the first time in his career, he'll be hosting Saturday Night Live. Chris Brown will also be making his first appearance as the musical guest. Check Brand & Brown out on February 12.

January 30 -- A happy Russell Brand and Greta Gerwig are seen getting cozy on the set of their new movie Arthur. The two were spotted kissing on 5th Avenue in New York; they then moved over to the New York Public Library to finish some shots for the movie.

Brand's good friend P. Diddy recently told Now magazine that when the two get together -- the two became friends on the set of Get Him to the Greek -- it's not as fun as we all would expect: "It's not as exciting as people think. When we're together I'm not being Puff Daddy and Russell's not being Russell Brand. There's no hard partying or chasing girls, or doing crazy things. Seriously, we are real boring."
