A Look Back: "Rock of Ages"

“A Look Back” is a series of posts we here at Caughtonset.com feature weekly. It’s as simple as the title makes it sound. Each Friday we will take “A Look Back” to the set of a newly released film. Look at pictures from the set today, then watch the movie tonight.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Tom Cruise and even Katy Perry were caught on set of Rock of Ages while it was being filmed last Summer. The '80s themed musical, which was directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray) and also stars Alec Baldwin and Bryan Cranston hits theaters this weekend. Does this flashback in time have enough to take the number one spot at the box office this weekend? Not according to Ray Subers from boxofficemojo.com:

"The box office gets a heavy dose of 80s nostalgia this weekend thanks to musical Rock of Ages, which utilizes 80s rock tunes for all of its songs, and R-rated comedy That's My Boy, which finds Adam Sandler sporting an 80s mullet. This isn't the first time that a June weekend has harkened back to that decade: in 2010, The Karate Kid remake and The A-Team adaptation opened to a combined $81 million. There's virtually no chance that Rock of Ages and That's My Boy deliver a similar result, and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted will likely hold on to first place."

Madagascar 3 was the surprises winner last weekend, knocking off Ridley Scott's Prometheus, and it doesn't seem to have slowed too much over its first week in theaters. Subers is projecting Rock of Ages to finish in second this weekend at $28.6 million, behind only Madagascar 3 which he projects to drop 44% to $33.8 million. There is lots to choose from this weekend, animated family movie, R-rated comedy or 1980's musical. I don't think I can choose between all these great offerings, I might just have to see more than one.

Look Who Else Is On The Set Of "The Bitter Pill"? (Hint It's Catherine Zeta-Jones)

The hint may have gave it away because the answer is in fact Catherine Zeta-Jones. Zeta-Jones was also spotted on the set of The Bitter Pill in NYC on May 19.

After being married, having 2 kids and getting older it doesn’t look like she has aged a bit. I’m so jealous of how beautiful she still is. Not only was Jude Law working with Zeta-Jones on this scene, but he was also seen on set earlier in the day.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is spotted on the set of her new film Broken City in New York on Wednesday (November 16). Looks like she's channeling Grace Kelly, no?

When she's not busy filming a movie, Catherine and her husband Michael Douglas live in Bermuda (one of their many house). The North Wales Weekly News had a fun little anecdote about the couple that shows they are definitely part of the Bermudan community:

"Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas live there, and during the annual half marathon both of them were handing out water to the runners."

How neighborly!

Mark Wahlberg and Catherine Zeta-Jones are spotted on the set of their new film Broken City in New York yesterday (November 16). I'm digging Catherine's hat.

Welsh actor Rob Brydon revealed earlier this month to the BBC something pretty funny about growing up with Zeta-Jones (she's also Welsh):

"When I was 10 or 11 or 12, I was going into school one day and Catherine's mother said, 'I've forgotten to give Catherine her lunch money, will you give it to her?' I said I would. I went to the shop to get my lunch and then went to buy sweets. I bought pineapple chunks or cola cubes and I thought I had a lot of money, then realized it was money for Catherine."

Catherine Zeta-Jones on the set of "Rock of Ages"

Catherine Zeta-Jones is seen walking around the set of Rock of Ages in Miami earlier this week (August 9). She's looking as good as ever!

Rock of Ages is the second film Catherine has been seen on the set of this year. Back in April, she filmed Playing the Field in Shreveport, Louisiana. Check out all the pics on the Catherine Zeta-Jones page.

It was reported earlier this week that Catherine has quit smoking. After seeing husband Michael Douglas battle with throat cancer last year, she gave up the unhealthy habit. Good for you Catherine!

The "Playing the Field" cast on set

Jessica Biel, Gerard Butler, and Catherine Zeta-Jones are spotted on the set of their new film Playing the Field last week in Shreveport, Louisiana (April 21). Also seen on set were Uma Thurman and Dennis Quaid. Check out all the pics in the gallery below.

Hoping to cash in on movie and television production, the city of Shreveport opened a huge 25,000 square foot sound stage earlier this month. The grand-opening party was actually attended by Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel. The Shreveport Times has more:

"Shreveport rolled out the red carpet Thursday for the long-awaited opening of Millennium Studios — the city's hope for bringing prosperity back to the Ledbetter Heights neighborhood. In true Hollywood style, the party included appearances from A-list actors Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel. The pair, in town to shoot Millennium feature Playing the Field, posed with politicians during a VIP reception where wine and beer flowed. The public came in later to enjoy food and drinks, dance to live music and tour the $10 million-plus facility.

"Local family filmmaker Suzanne Smith beamed as she looked around the just-opened building at 300 Douglas St. She said there's more to the industry being here than tax structure. She tried working in Los Angeles and Austin, Texas, but she never got as far as she did here.

"'The people from California are coming here because we offer Southern hospitality that they don't always get,' said Smith, who splits time between Shreveport and Nacogdoches, Texas. 'It's a chance to encourage filmmakers that might not get that in that chaos out there.'"

Catherine Zeta-Jones is spotted on the set of Playing the Field in Shreveport, Louisiana on Wednesday (April 20).

As you may have heard, Catherine recently sought treatment for bipolar II disorder. It's been a tough few weeks for the actress, but it's good to see her back on set. Regarding her ordeal, Catherine said in a statement:

"This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them. If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help."

Well spoken indeed.
