Al Pacino on the set of his new HBO project

Al Pacino is spotted on the set of his untitled HBO project in New York on Wednesday (July 6). Pacino plays legendary – yet troubled – music producer Phil Spector in the film (hence the crazy hair).

The director of the film, David Mamet, ignited a firestorm of controversy last month in an interview he did with the Financial Times. Mamet told the paper that he doesn’t believe Spector killed actress Lana Clarkson in 2003 (he was convicted in 2009 and is currently serving 19 years to life in prison):

“I don’t think he’s guilty. I definitely think there is reasonable doubt. … They should never have sent him away. Whether he did it or not, we’ll never know but if he’d just been a regular citizen, they never would have indicted him.”

January 20 — Al Pacino is spotted in full make-up on the set of Adam Sandler‘s upcoming comedy Jack and Jill, currently filming in Los Angeles. The actor was spotted on set last week wearing a medieval costume.

Pacino currently has five movies in production (Jack and Jill, Mary Mother of Christ, Arbitrage, Hands of Stone, and King Lear) so it looks like he’s going to be a pretty busy man in 2011.

Al Pacino on the set of “Jack and Jill”

January 17 – Al Pacino– looking unrecognizable in his padded medieval costume — takes a break after filming a scene for Jack & Jill in Los Angeles. Pacino is teaming up with funnyman Adam Sandler in this upcoming comedy scheduled to be released sometime this year.

Pacino won a Golden Globe, last Sunday, for his role as Dr. Jack Kevorkian in the HBO movie You Don’t Know Jack. Interestingly, Pacino won his first Golden Globe 37 years ago for his work in Serpico. Somehow he was nominated but didn’t win a Best Actor Golden Globe for The Godather.
